Pre-operational inspection of shipboard cranes
Verification of the observable condition and documentation of cranes prior to operations, with findings recorded to support decision-making and refer outstanding matters to the responsible technical personnel.
Request attendanceBefore commencing a cargo operation, knowing the observable condition of shipboard cranes helps identify outstanding matters requiring attention. The pre-operational inspection gathers information on the equipment, its documentation and the points accessible at the time of the survey, providing the client with an organized basis for discussing necessary actions with the vessel and the other parties responsible for the operation.
In accordance with the instructions received, the work may cover crane identification, indicated working capacity, certificates presented, and available inspection and maintenance records. Visual observation may include wire ropes, hooks, blocks, sheaves and accessible structural components, recording apparent signs of wear, corrosion, deformation or damage. Unexamined areas and access limitations must be indicated.
When previously agreed and safe, the scope may include monitoring functional checks conducted by the vessel's authorized crew, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and onboard procedures. Photographs and objective observations make it possible to link each finding to the equipment examined. Situations requiring further investigation are referred to those responsible, without replacing the necessary specialist assessment.
The pre-operational survey is not equivalent to a load test, a detailed periodic examination, a statutory or class inspection, nor does it constitute formal technical approval for use. Since January 2026, SOLAS has incorporated specific requirements for lifting appliances covered by regulation II-1/3-13. Applicability depends on the characteristics of the vessel and equipment, the installation date, and the applicable flag State requirements.
To plan attendance with TWS, please provide the vessel, port, schedule, number and characteristics of the cranes, intended operation and available documentation. Early definition of the scope makes it possible to focus the survey on the needs of shipowners, charterers, operators and their representatives, with a record of the conditions found and outstanding matters identified. On-site attendance is provided in Northern and Northeastern Brazil, subject to availability confirmation.
